We all know it’s important for us to eat well to maintain our health, but everyone's body is different. It is always said that a balanced diet is best, but what exactly does that mean? This page will explore some of the popular diets today to help you find what is most beneficial for you.
Diets and eating patterns are not one-size-fits-all. Everyone is different and you have to find what works best for your body. For some, eating six small meals a day may work great. For others, eating a few larger meals, practicing fasting a few times per week or even having a cheat meal might be a better option. A healthy eating pattern is also important. Good nutrition can also boost your mental abilities and performance. The foods to eat and avoid for optimum functioning may surprise you. Everyone says a balanced diet is best, but what exactly does that mean?
Balanced diet:
· Proteins – meats, legumes, dairy – needed for the production of many enzymes and proteins that regulate processes and systems in our bodies.
· Carbohydrates – whole grains, vegetables, fruits and veggies - loaded with fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, all of which play an integral role in overall health. Nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains also contain carbs, but also pack a wealth of other micronutrients into each serving as well.
· Fats - healthy fats fit into a well-balanced diet, but they’re also linked to a long list of health benefits, including improved heart health, increased insulin sensitivity, and decreased weight gain. A diet lacking in these essential fatty acids can pose detrimental health effects, causing symptoms like dry skin, increased hunger, low energy levels, and brain fog. Be sure to include in your diet a variety of heart-healthy fats, such as extra-virgin olive oil, coconut oil, grass-fed butter, ghee, and dark chocolate.
· Salt - Sodium is necessary for maintaining electrolyte levels, regulating nerve function and ensuring that your muscles can work efficiently. Low levels of sodium can cause serious side effects, including fatigue, nausea, headaches, and irritability. While this doesn’t mean that you should start loading up on the salt, it may not be necessary to cut it out of your diet completely, especially if you have normal blood pressure. The type of salt is an important part of the health equation. Most commercial salt is processed so that the nutrients are removed, which contributes to the negative effects. Using sea salt, or large chunk Himalayan salt that you grind yourself is filled with iodine and nutrients that make it an option that is used by your body in the way it was intended.
· Probiotics - fermented foods like sauerkraut, kombucha, kimchi, natto, and yoghurt that add to the health of your gut biome.
· Prebiotics - prebiotic foods can increase numerous probiotic microorganisms - foods high in prebiotics include chicory root, dandelion greens, leeks, garlic, raw or cooked onions, raw jicama, raw asparagus, Jerusalem artichokes, dandelion greens, under-ripe bananas, and acacia gum (or gum Arabic).
The most important factors in eating healthy are not just about what we eat but also what is hidden in the foods we eat. There are chemicals used to process foods that are causing health issues for many people.
Things to avoid:
· processed foods
· artificial sugars
· trans fats
· food additives
· food dyes
It’s important to take quality supplements and ones that are in their natural form as opposed to a synthetic version. Even though natural supplements usually cost more, the price doesn’t always tell the whole story. One of the best ways to tell on multi vitamins is to check if they have the natural versions of Folate and Vitamin B12, mentioned below.
Pregnant women have been told for decades that Folic Acid is an important nutrient for the health of their baby during pregnancy. However, Folic Acid, which is a synthetically created supplement is not what people expect it to be. It is an incomplete molecule and could instead be damaging to the health of your baby. The natural and complete form of this supplement is methylfolate, also known as vitamin B9, and is usually called Folate, or d-methylfolate. This is the form that will bring the desired health benefits, especially during pregnancy. If you ever find a multi-vitamin or supplement that has Folic Acid in it instead of Folate, it should be filed in the round filing cabinet (trash can). I believe it is a travesty that it is being sold on store shelves.
Vitamin B12 shots and infusions are popular in clinics and health centers to give patients a boost in their energy and the immune system. However, the type of B12 in the shot or infusion can make a big difference in your health.
Most practitioners use synthetic forms of Vitamin B12, usually cyanocobalamin. This is a because it is cheaper and does not have to be refrigerated. The synthetic forms of Vitamin B12 can come with side effects including headaches and fatigue. It is also not uncommon for people to develop allergies to all forms of B12 from taking the synthetic forms.

The natural form of Vitamin B12 is called Methylcobalamin and is the only one that should be taken for optimum health. Methylcobalamin can also be taken in sublingual tablets that dissolve under the tongue and chewable tablets. A safe level for most adults is 1000 micrograms per day. Always consult with your physician before adding any supplements to your regimen.
Besides caffeine, there are many natural supplements that can help boost brain function.
• Vitamin B-12 – methylcobalamin, the natural form of B-12.
• Acetyl-L-carnitine – helps concentration.
• Bacopa Monieri – Nootropic herb – boosts both mood and brain function.
• DHA – Fish Oil/Krill Oil – boosts overall brain function.
• DMAE (2-dimethylaminoethanol) – enhances memory and concentration.
A cup of coffee or tea with some dark chocolate before a test or big meeting can help!
Energy drinks are a popular trend for getting a surge of energy. While some can have great health benefits, others have ingredients and additives that can be unhealthy and damaging.
Risks of energy drinks:
Many energy drinks have high levels of caffeine, sugar, and other synthetic ingredients that in combination can be a risk for high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and even heart attacks. The high levels of caffeine along with the amino acids can spike blood pressure to dangerous levels.
Another risky ingredient is cyanocobalamin, which is a synthetic form of vitamin B-12 with a side chain of cyanide. It is used because it is cheaper than the natural form, which is methylcobalamin.
Healthful energy drinks:
The best energy drinks will contain natural forms of ingredients. Drinks that contain green tea for caffeine, methylcobalamin (natural vitamin B) for energy, and stevia as a sweetener are best bets. The amino acids that are sometimes found in energy drinks like L-carnitine and L-taurine are helpful for building muscle and beneficial for brain and cardiovascular health. DMAE is also helpful for brain function. Many healthful energy drinks come in powder form that can be added to water, juice, or tea.
Stevia has been a misunderstood and controversial sweetener. Stevia is NOT an artificial sweetener and is NOT a synthetic lab-created substance. Mainly, it comes from the leaves of a plant species called Stevia rebaudiana. It is an herb, and its sweetness comes from glycoside, which is an incomplete form of a sugar molecule. So, it has no sugar value, and it has zero calories.
Stevia has many beneficial effects for health, while giving the sweetness many people desire without the calories. For those with high blood pressure, stevia is beneficial for lowering blood pressure, and can be added to herbal tea or lemonade for a healthy drink. It is about 150 to 200 times as sweet as sugar, so a very tiny amount is needed to achieve a sweet taste.
Where the confusion comes in, is because many of the stevia products found in grocery stores also have artificial sugars that are the main portion of the ingredients. It is because of the added artificial sugars that these stevia products may have negative side effects. Here are some of them to check for on the stevia product label:
Erythritol - One of the most common, which is a sugar alcohol made from corn. This has side effects of blood clots contributing to the chance for heart attacks and stroke.
Dextrose – a simple sugar, usually derived from corn. It is found in corn syrup and high-fructose corn syrup. Even though it is the type of sugar found in our blood, the side effects of too much of this simple sugar can be increased urination, leading to dehydration and increased thirst, and can also cause edema, a build up of fluid in the extremities.
Thankfully, some companies produce pure stevia powder. These are usually found with supplements rather than alongside the sugars and sweeteners in the grocery aisle. Check the back label of the product before purchasing one to make sure it is only pure stevia.
Stevia has been known to be used by many other cultures for over 1500 years. Pure stevia is one of my recommendations for people with diabetes, high blood pressure, and for those wanting to lose weight.
Also, be on the lookout for nasty preservatives like sodium benzoate in the liquid forms of stevia.

There are many factors that effect the regulation of our metabolism besides diet and exercise. Ignoring these factors will cause a person to struggle with their weight.
One of the main reasons people become overweight or cannot lose weight is because of chemicals. I’m talking about household cleaners, pesticides, herbicides, even the plastic of the water bottles you may be drinking from. Many of these products are endocrine disruptors. What that means is they are harmful to the endocrines system, which are the glands that secrete hormones in our body. When we don’t have the right amount of hormones, our body isn’t working up to par. There are some very important supplements that will help you lose weight and feel better – this is really amazing and should not be taken lightly. Please look at your local health food store for supplements in the liver help section. Supplements with turmeric, milk thistle, and green tea will help your body to clear out toxins, making your glands and organs work better, which will help you lose weight. Another thing that will help is MCT oil supplements (Medium-chain triglycerides). This is the substance found in high concentrations in the keto diet that turns up your body’s metabolism. These can also be found online and in health food stores.
Also, getting out in the sun will help your metabolism to work better (no kidding!). I don’t recommend commercial sunscreens (more toxic chemicals), but try organic coconut oil. Don’t stay out in the sun long enough to get burned, but a little sunlight on your skin helps to stimulate and regulate many of the hormone pathways.
